Pomena – Gateway to Mljet National Park

Written by:

Pomena is a small fishing village on the western tip of Mljet and one of the island’s most popular destinations. Best known as the main entrance to Mljet National Park, it’s the perfect base for exploring the island’s famous saltwater lakes and the Benedictine monastery on St. Mary’s Islet.

Practical Tips for Visitors

  • How to get there: Pomena is about a 30-minute drive from Sobra, the island’s main ferry port. In summer, catamarans from Dubrovnik also stop directly at Pomena, making it convenient for day trips.
  • What to do: Rent a bike to cycle around the National Park’s lakes, take a boat trip to St. Mary’s Islet, or go kayaking on the tranquil waters of Veliko and Malo Jezero. Swimming in the lakes is a highlight, especially in the warmer Malo Jezero.
  • Where to eat: Pomena has several restaurants and taverns right by the waterfront. Seafood risotto, octopus salad, and dishes prepared “under the peka” are specialties worth trying.
  • Accommodation: The only large hotel on the island, Hotel Odisej, is located in Pomena, alongside many private apartments and guesthouses. Staying here gives you the easiest access to the park.
  • Best for: Nature lovers, cyclists, families, and travelers who want to be right next to Mljet’s most famous attractions.

Beyond its practical advantages, Pomena retains a relaxed, seaside charm. Fishing boats still line the harbor, and pine forests surround the village, filling the air with the scent of the Mediterranean. In the evenings, Pomena’s restaurants and cafés come alive with visitors sharing stories of their island adventures.

For anyone visiting Mljet, Pomena is more than just a gateway – it’s a destination in itself, offering both comfort and direct access to the island’s most breathtaking natural wonders.
